HDHMR or plywood for a painted finish?

HDHMR, without much argument. Plywood has grain that telegraphs through paint and core voids that show at a machined edge. HDHMR has neither, so a sprayed finish comes out visibly flatter.

Will it hold a screw?

In the face, well. In the edge, less firmly than plywood — use a coarse-thread screw designed for engineered board, or an insert where the fixing will carry load or be repeatedly removed.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

Outside the direct shower zone and with every edge properly sealed, yes. The moisture resistant grade handles humidity well, but no engineered board should sit in standing water.

Do I need to seal the cut edges?

Yes, and it matters more than moving up a grade. Every cut exposes the core, and an unsealed edge draws moisture in regardless of how good the panel is. Band it, prime it, or at minimum lacquer the hidden edges.

About this product

Sapphire HDHMR is a high density, high moisture resistant engineered board made from wood fibre bonded under heat and pressure into a homogeneous panel.

Because it has no grain direction and no internal voids, it behaves differently from plywood in ways that matter for finished work: a routed profile comes out crisp with no tear-out, a sprayed or membrane-pressed finish sits flat with no grain telegraphing through, and an edge machines clean enough to leave exposed.

The moisture resistant grade tolerates the humidity of Indian kitchens and bathrooms considerably better than standard MDF, which makes it the practical substrate for painted kitchen shutters and profile joinery.
