Block board edge showing the softwood batten core

Softwood batten core, IS 1659

Block Boards

Block boards built on a softwood batten core and marked to IS 1659 — lighter and stiffer than plywood over a long span, which makes them the better choice for wide shutters and unsupported shelving.

Specifying block boards

What to know before you order

A block board's core is solid softwood battens laid edge to edge, faced with veneer both sides. The result is lighter than plywood of the same thickness and resists sagging better over a long unsupported run.

That makes it the standard choice for tall wardrobe shutters, door leaves, long shelves and table tops — anywhere the panel spans a distance and weight matters.

Boric acid treatment gives natural resistance to termite and borer attack through the full thickness of the core.
