Why choose block board over plywood?

Over a long unsupported span, a batten core is lighter and stiffer for its weight, so it sags less. For a tall shutter or a 1200 mm shelf that is the deciding factor. For structural or heavily loaded work, plywood is still the better panel.

Do I need to seal the cut edges?

Yes, and it matters more than moving up a grade. Every cut exposes the core, and an unsealed edge draws moisture in regardless of how good the panel is. Band it, prime it, or at minimum lacquer the hidden edges.

Which core grade do I need?

MR-core for dry interiors — bedrooms, living areas, general storage. BWP-core where the shutter or shelf is in a kitchen, bathroom or utility area. The core is what fails first in damp conditions, so it is worth matching properly.

What does boric acid treatment do?

It makes the softwood core unpalatable to termites and borers. Because the treatment goes through the core rather than sitting on the surface, cutting the board does not expose untreated timber.

GPI block board is ISI certified to IS 1659:2004 under licence CM/L-9300177011, supplied in 19 mm and 25 mm thicknesses across six sheet sizes and in both MR-core and BWP-core grades.

The core is softwood battens laid edge to edge and faced both sides. That construction is lighter and stiffer per unit weight than plywood, which is why it is the standard choice for tall wardrobe shutters, door leaves and long unsupported shelves.

It is boric acid treated, giving natural resistance to termite and borer attack through the full thickness of the core rather than as a surface coating, and carries a 25 year guarantee from an ISO 9001:2015 certified process.
